It was a welcome return to action at Galabank on Tuesday evening for Annan with the visit of Berwick Rangers for the re-arranged Irn Bru SFL3 League match. The cold brisk atmosphere made it an evening to be well wrapped up and both teams produced a highly competitive match with both teams having to be content with a point.
Annan started brightly and in the 5th minute Mike Jack whipped in an inviting ball across the face of the goal from the right and minutes later Steven Sloan had a solo effort which did not test keeper Mark Peat. Annan continued to press and keeper Peat plucked out a 12th minute corner to avert any potential danger.
After absorbing the early pressure it was Berwick who started press the Annan defence and it took a superb fingertip save from Greig Kelly to deny Paul Currie in the 15th minute. Annan responded with a net bound shot from Mike Jack which was blocked by a mass of Berwick defenders.
Annan had a real let off in the 25th minute when Neilson lost possession wide on the right and the visitors immediately pressed forward when Paul McMullan made a bee line for the Annan goal only to be denied by a fine Macbeth tackle.
Berwick Rangers opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, the goal was created in midfield after Annan lost possession and when the ball was sent in from the right by McClaren it was only half cleared as far as Paul Currie who finished with an unstoppable shot from 25 yards into the top corner of the net to give keeper Kelly no chance.
Berwick finished the half on the attack and it took a timely challenge from John Macbeth on Fraser McClaren to avert a dangerous situation.
Annan started to impose their game on the visitors in the second half but not before Aaron Muirhead denied Damon Gray in the 55th minute with a timely tackle on the edge of the box.
Annan squared the match in the 57th minute with a well executed goal. Bryan Gilfillan broke up the play in the middle and sent Cox on his way down the left and his cross to the back post was headed into the net by Graeme Bell from 2 yards.
It was just the tonic Annan needed and the home side started to enjoy a period of sustained pressure. David Cox had a real opportunity to edge Annan ahead in the 70th minute when Gilfillan sent the Annan striker through on goal but the opportunity was lost when the striker rounded the keeper and his shot was cleared off the line.
Substitute Phil Storey won a corner with his first touch in the 79th minute and from the resulting corner Neilson headed over.
Annan manager Harry Cairney was happy with the point and delighted his team were back in action. “It was a tight match, Berwick played some good football but the work rate from Annan was first class and overall we deserved a share of the points. Jimmy Crease the Berwick boss thought a draw was the right result “I was disappointed with the goal we had chalked off in the first half it looked from where I was standing that one of the Annan players pushed his own player but overall no complaints. |
