Match Report

ANNAN ATHLETIC 4 BUCKIE THISTLE 0

Annan made sure that there was to be no repeat of last year’s cup shock when they disposed of Buckie Thistle with an emphatic four goal victory in this second round replay to earn a third round tie away to Stenhousemuir. Once Ally Love had put Annan ahead in the 13th minute there was no way back for the Highland League side and indeed had it not been for some mediocre finishing and another fine performance from Kevin Main in the Buckie goal it could have turned out to be an embarrassing defeat for the Highland League side who failed to stamp any authority on the game.

Annan boss Jim Chapman made a couple of changes to his starting line up from the side which were defeated at Raith in the Ramsdens Cup with Martin McNiff and Josh Todd given a starting berth at the expense of Steven Swinglehurst and Steven Black with both players having to be content with a seat on the bench. Keiran Brannan who had an impressive match at Raith was first to threaten when he was presented with an opening in the opening minute but a timely challenge by Chris Angus averted a dangerous situation. Kenny Arthur then misjudged a situation in the 5th minute when he handled the ball outside the penalty area but Aaron Conway could not hit the target when his free kick sailed over the bar. The opening goal was created down the left after Annan got the break of the ball, David Hopkirk collected the ball wide on the left and his darting run to the bye line was finished with a perfect cut back into the path of Ally Love who slammed the ball low and into the corner of the near post giving Kevin Main no chance. It was a confident start from Annan who continued to take the game to the visitors and Kevin Main dealt confidently with a Weatherson free kick in the 20th minute. Martin McNiff was the first player to receive a yellow in the 27th minute and the game was interrupted by a series of free kicks but in the 36th minute Annan’s pressure once again paid dividends. It was a good build up to the goal culminating with a crisp low shot from Matty Flynn from just outside the box with the ball cannoning off a Buckie defender on its way into the corner of the net. Within a minute, Hopkirk who was a constant menace all afternoon broke down the flank finishing with a ball across the face of goal to the advancing Josh Todd who only just failed to connect with the cross. Love went close after a good build up involving McNiff and Hopkirk and Buckie were finding it increasingly difficult as Annan threatened at will. Hopkirk then had a golden opportunity to get his name on the score sheet in the 42nd minute when Josh Todd unlocked the Buckie defence to put him clean through on goal but disappointingly, with only keeper Kevin Main to beat he somehow managed to guide the ball past the upright. It was real let off but there was no let up for the visitors and it took a breathtaking save from Kevin Main when he tipped Kieron Brannan’s net-bound effort round the post for a corner kick. With half time approaching Annan struck once again after a well constructed move, Hopkirk and Love combined to set up Flynn up who once again finished with a crisp low unstoppable shot from an almost identical position to his earlier goal.

Niki Smith was introduced at the start of the second half for Fraser Forbes and within minutes of the restart Love made the most of a rash Heggarty challenge, this culminated in the Buckie player wresting the Annan player to his feet and in the following incident Weatherson and Heggarty recieved yellow cards. Love‘s effort in the 50th minute was deflected for a corner from which Weatherson’s effort cannoned off the base of the post. Kenny Arthur needed two attempts to save Aaron Conway’s net-bound effort as Buckie tried in vain to gain a foothold in the match and moments later the same player’s shot from outside the box sailed over the bar. Kevin Main’s 62nd minute save from Josh Todd’s effort was stunning as somehow he managed to tip the net-bound shot round the post. From the resulting corner the keeper had to be alert to deal with Hopkirk’s net-bound shot. Todd should really have done better when Love set the ball on a plate for the on loan Carlisle player who shot past the post. The introduction of Kenny Mackay and Scott Davidson posed another dimension to Annan’s attacking options and with the game heading towards full time it was Mackay who completed a miserable afternoon for Buckie when following a corner, Steven Black sent in a net-bound header which was scrambled clear only as far as Mackay who slammed the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Jim Chapman commented after last week game, “I did not have to motivate the players for this game as one or two Buckie players did it for me, there were several comments made by some players that were disrespectful and not befitting of the their manager Gary Hake who is a gentleman and knowledgeable guy. It is the easiest thing in the world to mouth off but players should show more respect to professional players irrespective of the level you play at. The only disappointing factor was the lack of more goals due to some disappointing finishing and some inspired goalkeeping which would have painted a truer reflection on the game”.
