02/04/2013 - League Reconstruction, etc - Club Statement

Club Statement

Last Thursday the SFL clubs met at Hampden to further discuss the proposed changes to Scottish Football, at this meeting our Chief Executive, David Longmuir, delivered up to date information to enable clubs to make an informed decision on the way forward. The result is well documented in that the SFL clubs are split down the middle.

There have been a number of public releases since Thursday’s meeting, Annan Athletic FC would like to put some clarity on our position.

Annan Athletic realise that there is a great opportunity to bring change to our game and welcome the opportunity to do so, we do not fear change – our club has seen significant change over the last few years and we have relished it. Fundamentally we do not accept this ‘take it or leave it’ scenario that is so similar in many ways to what we (the SFL clubs) were subjected to last summer.

The Scottish Football League is 123 years old, the current proposals signify the demise of the SFL, surely we have an obligation to ensure that if the SFL is indeed no more then we must be sure that the correct decisions are being made in a timely and structured manner and not with a bullet to our head and ‘the take it or leave it’ scenario. The SFL have shown time and time again that that we can deliver, how we handled the Rangers process, the recent Communites League Cup final, this weekend we have another sell-out National Final  - these are examples of our success, the number of players that we blood from an early age, our bonds with the communities we serve, the personnel in the offices at Hampden, we have an obligation to each and everyone but more importantly we have an obligation to the game and to the supporters.

The basic principles and key areas of change are well documented, that is not an issue, it is the level of detail, lack of due diligence, timescale that is causing concern, threats of a breakaway, SPL 2, ‘now or never’ do not help the situation one bit.

There has to be some common ground, ‘leaps of faith’ are mentioned, surely  in a merger that is a two-way process, if the meetings in a fortnight indicate a NO vote then we cannot allow a stalemate or stand-off to scupper the whole process.

Could we consider bringing in someone to facilitate the process of change, we are not suggesting bringing in a consultancy as such as you would see in industry but someone such as Henry McLeish. Heads of Terms could be agreed, our (SFL) leap of faith could be to scrap the settlement agreement for this period of transition to the new SPFL, the SPL’s ‘leap of the faith’ could be to go with an agreeable 1-42 distribution model /play-offs. At last week’s meeting David Longmuir mentioned a shadow board be put in place – the concept seems fair and pragmatic, it would be even more acceptable if someone neutral who clearly loves the game were to facilitate the process of ‘merger’.

Balance and objectivity seem to be a bit rare at the moment, this is time for cool heads and pragmatism. Due Diligence is key, it is crucial that everyone recognises the importance of such a process. We also believe we have every right to be cautious considering recent History.
