Club Statement: Sam Wallace
Today the club were deeply saddened to learn of the sad passing of our Vice President Sam Wallace.
Sammy as he was affectionately know to everyone around the club was a true pioneer of Annan Athletic FC and presided over a journey that would take the club from the Cumberland League to the professional ranks of the SPFL. During this time he held the position of manager, Chairman, Board Member and then Vice President.
Sammy first joined the club as manager and would go onto become the most successful manager in the clubs history as he not only led the team to trophies and titles but wrote his name into the history books at Galabank as the first manager to lead us into the Scottish Cup as his side faced Stranraer at home in their first ever tie in the competition. He would lead the club twice more in the competition with games against Ayr United and Queens Park.
As the club transitioned from the Cumberland League to the Southern Counties him and his sides would go onto lift every trophy in the South of Scotland. This didn’t stop there though, backed by an ambitious board they then moved into the East of Scotland League and would lift the East of Scotland First Division title before then going onto win the East of Scotland Premier League.
Following his spell as Manager he then went onto join the clubs committee before becoming Chairman and Vice President. As Vice President he would represent the club both home and away on matchdays and was the welcoming face to all clubs and fans alike on matchday.
Today the club have a lost a true and loyal servant but with it one of their biggest fans. The club would like to pass on our deepest, heartfelt condolences to Sammy’s wife Janet along with his daughters Karen and Mandy and their families.
