Disability Team Kick Off The Season In Style

Annan Athletic DFC kicked off their season in style with a great start to the championships as they started the season with three wins and a draw. First up were the main championships contenders Claremont Colts and whilst Annan played some great football they couldn’t find the breakthrough in what was a very close game. The best chance of the match fell to Jack Morrison but his header hit the cross bar and came out and the end result nil nil was probably a fair result for both teams.

Next up were new opponents to the Black and Golds in the form of Spartans Red, they were a bigger and older team who certainly knew how to mix it up, not something we normally see from our own team. This aside, the team stuck to the task in hand and although not playing at their best Annan they won the game from a late free kick. Carl hit a cracking right footed shoot to the keepers right hand post and this took a deflection and was awarded as an own goal but we gave it to Carl as they seen the match out to win 1-0.

Next up were our old adversary Stirling city B, who this year also have a couple of new players. The Annan lads are very friendly with the Stirling team and it was a constant battle to keep their mind on the football. Stirling are a strong side and although Annan won their last game they new they had something to prove against their opponents. The first five minutes Stirling must have thought they were at the Alamo, only for the Goalie managing some unbelievable saves keeping the score line down. Annan front and midfield man battered the goals until final a corner and with Joseph moving away from his marker and a great ball in from Carl, Joseph caught it sweetly with his right boot and it was one nil. Stirling started really coming into the game now and Paul, Annan’s keeper was called into action to make some great saves of his own some of them would not have looked out of place in Annan’s first team. Then with a good throw out from Paul and some one two football with Carl and Duffy, Carl ended up in the corner and with his own admission he crossed it in for Jack but it swerved in the air taking it goal bound, the keeper jumped for it and palmed it in the back of his own net, so another of Carl’s goals went down to own goal. Carl keeps saying that he meant to cross it but we’ve convinced him that he was taking a shot on goal. 2-0 and their was still some time left for Stirling to get back into the game but Annan were now firing on all cylinders and were not prepared to let this happen even though Rob and I were biting our nails till the final whistle, two nil it finished.

With the lads playing much more like the Annan Athletic we know, they started the final game on a high and passed the ball around with great intent and blew Giffnock away. Front man Jack scored a hat trick with the aid of some fine crosses from Carl and Duffy and on that note at last a goal for the midfield man Duffy who had put a lot of effort into the whole day and was rewarded with a goal having had more shots than Davie Crockett’s rifle. Not to be out done Joseph also got himself on the score sheet and  everything was now going Annan’s way. Giffnock are not a bad side but they just picked the wrong time to play Annan. The boys weren’t finished though and midfielder Carl then put the game to bed with another and one that he could actually claim without the aid of a deflection. The game finished 6-0 giving Annan one of their best results for a good few years. It turned out to be a great day and well done to the lads, onwards and upwards for the rest of the season.
