Kelty Hearts proceeded to the third round of the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup with a deserved victory over Annan Athletic on Wednesday evening . It was very much a game of 2 halves with Kelty overcoming Annans first half lead and despite having Murray Carstairs sent off in the 20th minute the Fife side prodded and worked their way back into the match and were eventually rewarded in the 66th minute when Daniel Ashe grabbed the eqauliser to send the teams into penalty kicks.
Annan started very promisingly and went ahead in the 20th minute it was a simple goal in the making with Scott McLeans free kick being headed back across the face of the goal to the unmarked Russell Currie who grabbed his first goal for the black and golds.
Minures later Murray Carstairs was sent off for a challenge on Jordan Holt and this was quicky followed by a couple of substitutions that Barry Ferguson made with Husband and Linton replacing Mutch and Ritchie.
On the 25th minute Sean McKirdy hit a vicious 25 yarder which cannoned off the crossbar . Annan continued to create chances Scott McLean went close in the 34th minute with MacKenzie saving the effort.
The second half saw Kelty take the game to Annan with most of their moves being directed down the right , Annan made a substitution removing Jamie Ballantyne and bringing on Lewis McLear in an effort to bring more attacking flair to the Annan attack.
Aaran Taylor was at hand to save Gary Cennerazzo’s effort in the 66th minute as Kelty looked to unlock the Annan defence. Kelty’s pressure paid off in the 69th minute when Daniel Ashe headed home form close range when he latched on to Stephen Husbands cross to the back post.
Annan introduced Christain Nade for Russel Currie in the 74th minute and minutes later the Annan striker scored with a well placed shot which was ruled offside. It was a fortunate moment in the game for Kelty .
The match flowed from end to end in the final 10 minutes with neither side able to grab the winner to send the match straight to penalty kicks.Daniel Ashe missed the first spot kick for the visitors with Taylor saving the effort and on the 5th kick Christain Nade failed to score with Ben MacKenzie saving the effort two kicks later Matthew Douglas had his effort well saved and Kelty deservedly progressed into round three of the Tunnocks Caramel Wafer Cup
