Workington AFC v Annan FC
Match Report
Annan Athletic kicked off their pre season build up to the new season against Conference North side Workington at Borough Park on Saturday. The game played in glorious sunshine turned out to be an excellent encounter for both teams who fielded several players at various stages.
Annan got off to a flier when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 6th minute after a clumsy challenge by Anthony Wright on Kieran Brannon and Ally Love converted the spot kick. Workington replied in the 15th minute when Dom Kennedy finished an excellent run down the right with an inviting cross in to the box and Jonny Wright finished clinically from 6 yards. Minutes later the Reds took the lead when ex Annan player Ben McKenna flighted a good cross into the box and Jonny Wright once again connected with an unstoppable header into the top corner of the net beyond the reach of Kenny Arthur.
Both teams made numerous changes at half time and in the 50th minute Annan squared the match when Kieran Brannan’s shot cannoned off the cross bar leaving Jordan Moffat with the simplest of chances from 4 yards. The game continued to be played at a good tempo and in the 78th minute Workington were presented with a half chance when Peter Bradley mistimed a pass back and Andy Murray-Jones slipped his effort wide of the post , at the other end a poor pass back presented Jordan Moffat with a chance but the effort slipped past the post . Second half substitute Kenny McKay’s 84th minute effort was superbly tipped past the post by Tom Courtney and from the resulting corner Matthew Flynn’s deft header went agonisingly wide.
