Holiday Hunger
The Black and Gold foundation were delighted to team up with Dumfries and Galloway council to help deliver their Holiday Hunger programme within our community.
The programme that was delivered by the charitable arm of the club is focused on providing free meals to children of both Primary and Secondary school age.
The holidays ran from Monday 17 February to Friday 21 February and this was reflected in every Ward of our region where young people from Primary 1 to S6 were able to access free food as part of the council led Holiday Food Programme.
There are just over 4000 households in Dumfries and Galloway that meet three of the four criteria for deprivation. Every child that goes to a council-run school in the region gets free meals for the first three years. This continues after primary three, but only for children whose parents are on a low income or Universal Credit.
Many families say they rely on these meals, and for the fourteen weeks a year when children aren’t in school, this can be a real problem.
The programme follows on from the successful Gofitba project that was ran twice during 2019 that gave children free access to hot meals and exercise.
