Annan progressed to the fourth round of the Scottish FA U20 Youth Cup for the first time in their history with a victory at Galabank on Sunday against a Fraserburgh side who could consider themselves unlucky to be on the losing side. After a promising start Annan deservedly went ahead in the 20th minute from a set piece, man of the match James Gillan headed Jimmy Johnstone’s free kick into the top corner of the net.

Fraserburgh pushed hard towards the end of the half and were rewarded with a fine goal after James Gibb and Steven Davidson combined to send in a low cross and Aaron Garden finished the move off ramming the ball over the line from 4 yards after a good save from Craig Murray.

Annan regained the lead in the 63rd minute, Rabin Omar done the damage when won the ball on the bye line and cut it back into the path of Zak Caldwell who slammed the ball into the net from close range. Garden then squandered a glorious opportunity two minutes later shooting over the bar. The game was opening up and Michael McAnespie had a great chance to wrap the game up but he was to be denied with the goal at his mercy. The visitors pressed hard for the equaliser but it was Annan who clinched the game in the 85th minute when James Gillan’s superb strike from 25 yards thundered into the net to earn Annan a place in the fourth round.
