Annan Athletic kicked off the first match in their build up to the new season on Sunday afternoon with the visit of Northern League side Whitley Bay. Annan went ahead in the 10th minute when Peter Weatherson’s 25 yard free kick was badly misjudged by keeper Andy Jennison and the ball ending up in the back of the net.
Annan doubled their lead 15 minutes into the second half when Josh Todd and Matty Flynn combined for Flynn to side foot the ball past the advancing keeper from 8 yards. Rabin Omar concluded the scoring in the 85th minute when he latched on to a through ball to finish from 8 yards.
Annan boss Jim Chapman said this was a decent match to get our campaign for the new season up and running, “the result was not important but you are looking for signs of good things and I was not disappointed, we managed to give 20 players a run out against good opposition.” It was a hard shift for the Northern League side who had defeated Dalbeattie on the Saturday but their Manager ex Queens player Paddy Atkinson said he managed to get out of the match what he expected.
