Match Report

Annan moved back into a play off place with an emphatic victory against Montrose at Links Park on Saturday afternoon and on a day when all the results involving the teams around them went their way, meaning Annan are back in contention.

Peter Weatherson, 50 goals

There was one change to the team defeated by Clyde on Tuesday evening with Rabin Omar taking the place of the suspended Steven Swinglehurst.

Annan were first to show in the 6th minute when Josh Todd won a free kick 20 yards out and Weatherson’s free kick was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Jordan Miller. Gavin Swankie was unlucky minutes later when his cross ball caused alarm in the Annan defence with Omar and Fraser clashing with their heads but Hart pulled off a fine save to Fraser’s effort.

In the 12th minute Guy turned Masson to create a good opening but the shot did not match the build up and the opportunity was lost. It was a promising start from Annan and in the 17th minute another promising move down the left involving Todd and Omar almost opened up the home defence.

Montrose forced their first corner of the match in the 18th minute but 2 minutes later Annan opened the scoring although they had Montrose to thank for the opportunity when Jamie Clarke handled Todd’s cross ball and Weatherson converted the spot kick to mark his 50th goal for Annan.

In the 32nd minute Swankie did well making space for himself but he was thwarted by a fine Hart save, this was followed by another important save from Hart to deny Gary Fraser as the home team pressed for an opening. The game appeared to be heading towards half time when Todd forced Jamie Clarke to pass back to keeper Miller but the alert Weatherson intercepted the pass back on the 18 yard line and finished with a clinical low shot under the keeper and into the corner of net from 15 yards to give Annan a 2 goal interval cushion.

Annan started the second half on the offensive and within minutes Guy was played in by Flynn but the shot did not match the build up and the opportunity was lost. Martin McNiff headed over from a corner in the 50th minute

Annan scored the important third goal in the 59th minute when they broke from the half way line with Weatherson’s precise pass from inside his own half playing in Flynn who’s initial 15 yard low shot was saved by Miller but Flynn following up slotted the ball into the empty net for his 14th goal of the season.

Templeman was once again denied by an instinctive Hart save in the 65th minute .Minutes later Jamie Clarke started and finished a move for the home team ending with a disappointing weak shot which went past the post.

Annan increased their lead to four nil in the 68th minute and it was another well worked goal which cut open the Montrose reargaurd. Weatherson once again started the move from the centre of the park with a pass to Barry Cuddihy who released Lewis Guy who finished with a well directed shot was initially saved by Miller and Josh Todd following up made no mistake from 8 yards to put Annan on easy streak.

Josh Todd completed the misery for Montrose in the dying minute with a superb penetrating run finishing with spectacular shot from the edge of the box which soared into the top corner of the net to complete Annan’s most emphatic victory of the season .

On a day when all the clubs around them lost ground it still leaves Annan with a lot of work to do but with five games to go only 5 points now separate the top four teams.
