Watson decides to hang up his boots

Annan Athletic stalwart Peter Watson has taken the decision to hang up his boots as he announces his retirement from football with immediate effect.

It’s sad news for Annan fans as the “local lad” in the team call’s it a day.

Peter has been with the club and played in every season since joining the league back in 2008.

He has racked up over 350 appearances since joining the league, not to mention his days in the South and East of Scotland Leagues. He’s scored 12 goals over the years and was voted Player of the Year by the fans in 2016.

Speaking on his retirement, Peter said….

“After speaking to my family it sadly feels the right time to call it a day and hang up my boots. A decision made easier by lack of football due to Covid and other commitments. Playing with my hometown team for so long has been a tremendous honour and I’m very thankful to everyone that’s made that possible from every board member, coach/manager from youth level, South League, East League, reserves and first team, to all the players I have had the privilege of playing beside. Sharing those long bus trips, nights out, arguments, fights and laughs are memories I’ll never forget. From walking into training with then Manager Davie Irons at 14 years old to walking out at 34 I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every minute in between. I would like to thank my Mum and Dad for their support over the years, rarely missing a game and latterly bringing my son Theo to watch, and to my Wife Nicola who has had to endure the silence if we got beat and for putting up with the time I’ve spent away from home for training or away games. I would like to wish our Manager Peter and all the rest of the staff and players the best of luck for the season. And last but by no means least I would like to express my gratitude to the Galabank faithfuls who always had my back. Every tackle, header or (rare) goal was for you.”

Everyone at Galabank would like to thanks Peter for all his efforts and wish him well for the future.
